Andy Ruiz Jr is the new WBO, WBA (Super) and IBF champion after knocking Anthony Joshua down four times at the Madison Square Garden.
Joshua started on a proper footing when he dropped Ruiz Jr with a left hook in the third round, but was suddenly shocked by the comeback of the challenger, dropping the champion twice on the floor before the end of the third round.
Despite effort to bring himself back into the fourth round, Joshua was clearly still dazed when he returned to the corner at the end of that round.
Joshua hurt Ruiz Jr in the fifth, but the Mexican was back on the front foot in the sixth and the by then the champion’s stamina was quickly depleting.
Joshua on the seventh round took to the floor twice within a minute as he couldn’t keep to the diverse combination coming from Ruiz. As Joshua stood up looking for his footing, the referee decided that the champion was in no condition to continue. This spark a victory dance for Andy Jr and his team as they celebrate.
After the game, Eddie Hearn and Joshua confirmed that they is a possibility of an immediate rematch with Ruiz Andy Jr.
