Italy’s parliament has voted to reduce the number of representatives in both houses to save cost of running governance. The law approved by the lower house is to reduce the number of MPs from 630 to 400 and senators from 315 to 200, BBC reports. The Five Star Movement, the main party in Italy’s governing coalition promised in its manifesto to streamline parliament and save hundreds of millions of euros in salaries and expenses.  British Prime Minister Boris Johnson named Dominic Raab as foreign minister and first secretary of state on Wednesday, a return to office for the former Brexit minister who quit Theresa May’s government over her deal to leave the European Union. Alain Marcel de Souza, the former president of the ECOWAS Commission, died on Tuesday in Paris after suffering a heart attack, Beninese television reported on Wednesday. Somalia hotel attack left 26 people dead

Somalia’s security forces on Saturday ended an overnight attack by the al Shabaab Islamist militant group on a hotel in the southern port city of Kismayu that left 26 people dead and 56 injured.  Among the dead according to Ahmed Mohamed Islam, president of the autonomous Jubaland region are: three Kenyans, three Tanzanians, two Americans, a Briton and a Canadian. A presidential candidate for the upcoming regional elections and a prominent Canadian-Somali journalist were among the dead too. More than 50 people were wounded. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council(NSC), have build a tie to combat smuggling of Tramadol and other illicit drugs into the country. During a visit to the headquarters of the NSC in Lagos, Omolade Faboyede, NDLEA director in charge of seaports, stated that illegal drugs have found their way into society through the seaports. Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained for questioning by French police over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. According to Press Association Sport, France’s financial prosecutor’s office confirmed that 63-year-old Platini had been detained. The 1980s French football legend served as UEFA president until 2015 when he was banned by FIFA over separate ethics violations. Demonstrators, in hundreds of thousands, took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday to protest against proposed extradition law that would allow suspects to be sent to mainland China to face trial.
