Court forfeits Diezani’s $40m jewellery to Nigerian Govt

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the permanent forfeiture of jewelries valued at $40m recovered from the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke’s Abuja home to the Federal government.

Justice Nicholas Nicholas Oweibo gave the judgement on Tuesday stating that Diezani’s lawyer, Awa Kalu (SAN), could not provide evidence why the items should not be permanently forfeited.

The Nation reports that the jewellery, categorised into 33 sets, include “419 expensive bangles and 315 expensive rings”.

Others are 304 expensive earrings, 267 expensive necklaces, 189 expensive wristwatches and 174 expensive necklaces and earrings.

The rest are 78 expensive bracelets, 77 expensive brooches and 74 expensive pendants.

Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had told the court that items were beyond Diezani’s legitimate earnings, suggesting that they are suspected to be acquired with fraud proceeds.
