INEC declares Kogi west rerun inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Kogi west senatorial rerun election inconclusive.

The returning officer, Olayinde Lawal made the announcement on Sunday night, stating that the number of cancelled votes is higher than the margin between the top two candidates.

Smart Adeyemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), polled a total of 80,118 votes while Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 59,548 votes.

The difference between both candidate is 20,570 while 43,127 votes were cancelled.

Lawal stated that declaring the election inconclusive is in accordance with the electoral act.

He added that the date for supplementary election in 53 polling units would be announced later.

According to the results announced by INEC, Adeyemi won in 5 of the 7 local government areas that made up the senatorial district.
