Kogi Election: Masked security operatives invade Gov Makinde’s hotel

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde

Masked security operatives invaded Sutoria Hotel in Lokoja, where Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, lodged ahead of Saturday’s Kogi governorship election.

The invaders were said to have been dressed in State Security Services (DSS) and police uniforms when they stormed the area, attempting to surround the hotel before they were chased away by the police.

Makinde is in the state as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign council for the Kogi governorship election.

According to The Punch, one of the governor’s aides, who spoke on the condition of anonymity on the telephone, said residents in the area raised alarm when the invaders arrived the hotel.

He added that the governor’s security details also confronted the invaders.

He said, “The invaders arrived at the hotel dressed in the uniform of the Directorate of State Security Services and the police. They were masked and attempting to surround the hotel when people in the area, who were aware that the governor was there, raised the alarm.

“Policemen later arrived to chase them away. This is not good in a democracy. Are we at war? People should be free to make their choice without intimidation.

“If thugs could attempt to harass a governor in a Nigerian state, what awaits the people at the polling unit? If we call them thugs, who gave them the uniform belonging to security outfit? This is not a good thing in a democracy.”
