Rafael Nadal missed the chance to make it into the ATP Finals last four after defending champion Alexander Zverev’s beats Daniil Medvedev.
Rafeal fate lies on the victory of Daniil Medvedev against Zverev to make it to the last four after beating his opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5.
But Zverev went through with a win against Medvedev 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to play Dominic Thiem in the next stage, while Tsitsipas will face Roger Federer in the other semi-final on Saturday.
However Nadal received the trophy for finishing the year as the top-ranked player on the court at the O2 after his win.
“I’m super happy,” he said. “After all the things I went through in my career in terms of injuries I never thought at the age of 33-and-a-half I would have this trophy in my hands again.
“It’s something really, really emotional for me. A lot of work in the shadows to be where we are today.”
The 33-year-old Spaniard is said to be the oldest player to finish as the year-end number one since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973.
